Science provides data about climate and environmental change, but does not tell us how these changes will affect the economy, public policy, how we construct buildings, or how we think about human existence. Now, Rutgers is pooling its expertise from a wide range of natural and social sciences and the humanities to focus on the effects of change at home and around the globe. Collectively, this effort is called the Climate and Environmental Change Initiative.

Rutgers scientists want to understand the mechanisms that drive global and regional climate change; to be able to predict the future of the climate system as well as the impacts of change on a densely populated, coastal society; and to educate students and society about the causes and consequences of climate change.

One of the initiative's projects focuses on the impacts of climate change on drought and water resources in the mid-Atlantic region. Another explores how climate change will affect the distribution of the Asian tiger mosquito. Another focuses on developing accurate models of our region's climate to predict how global trends will manifest themselves at the local and regional levels. These are just a few of the ways in which this initiative is tackling the challenges of climate change and global warming.

Climate and environmental change touches our society on a variety of scales, from local to global and from individual to societal. By supporting the Climate and Environmental Change Initiative, you are helping to foster a greater understanding of climate and environmental change and its effects, and contribute to solutions. The knowledge gained as part of the Climate and Environmental Change Initiative will positively impact people and economies, in New Jersey and far beyond.
