On Tuesday July 10, the President of Sangmyung University, Myoung-Duck Seo, visited the Rutgers--New Brunswick Campus. The visit was President Seo's first since an informal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the two universities on March 29, 2007. The MOU establishes cooperation between the universities to encourage student and faculty exchanges between Rutgers and Sangmyung University.

New Brunswick, NJ-- On Tuesday July 10, the President of Sangmyung University, Myoung-Duck Seo, visited the Rutgers--New Brunswick Campus. The visit was President Seo's first since an informal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the two universities on March 29, 2007. The MOU establishes cooperation between the universities to encourage student and faculty exchanges between Rutgers and Sangmyung University.As stated in the MOU, "the aim of this agreement is to establish ties of friendship and cooperation and to promote mutual understanding, academic cooperation, and cultural and personal exchanges between the Department of Environmental Landscape Architecture program in Sangmyung University, the Republic of Korea and the Department of Landscape Architecture program at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, United States of America."
Both universities are making plans to provide faculty and students with opportunities for participating in educational and cultural activities and to assist professors from the other university with their research projects.
President Seo toured the Rutgers Department of Landscape Architecture with Dr. Jean Marie Hartman, chair of the department. He then met with Dr. Jerry Kukor, dean of academic and student programs at Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, where the Department of Landscape Architecture is situated.
"The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences is focusing on ways to enhance the involvement of its faculty and students in the international community," said Kukor. "It is extremely important for all Rutgers students and faculty to be involved in the international arena as the world becomes more and more integrated. This is one of many programs that will strengthen our overall commitment to internationalization of higher education."
President Seo also toured the Zimmerli Art Museum and the Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts. He met with Professor George Stauffer, dean of the school, to discuss the parallels between programs in performing, visual, graphic, and fine arts at Sangmyung and Rutgers Universities. Seo also met with Professor Stephen Reinert, dean of Rutgers Study Abroad, to discuss opportunities for undergraduate student exchanges with President Seo.
Prior to the MOU, Sangmyung University had provided funding for Dr. Jae-Keun Lee to spend a year as a visiting scholar at the Rutgers Department of Landscape Architecture. Lee is director of the Council for Industry Academic Cooperation and associate professor in the Department of Environmental Landscape Architecture at Sangmyung University.
"There is great interest among students at Sangmyung University to study at Rutgers," said Jean Marie Hartman, chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. "I already have two applications from Ph.D. Students who are interested in work in my lab."
