2009 SUMMER INSTITUTE
Personal Property/Computer
Risk Management Policy/Contract
PERSONAL PROPERTY
Rutgers University, University Housing and the Office of Special Programs, are not responsible or liable for personal property or damages to personal property caused by vandalism, malicious mischief, negligence of other residents, electrical surges and/or water and steam damage from ruptures or discharges of pipes, sprinklers, appliances, plumbing, and sewers. There is no coverage provided by the University or Office of special Programs to replace losses.
Students are responsible for protecting their personal property and the property of the university at all times. This requires constant attention to see that doors and windows are locked, cabinets and desks are locked where appropriate, equipment is physically secured, and unauthorized persons in private areas are reported. The University nor Office of Special Programs, is not responsible for and does not cover the loss of money, books, decorations, clothing or other valuable items that are kept in the apartment or desk on campus. Student valuables should be covered under their parent’s homeowners/renters policy, or specific property insurance to cover such exposures.
We strongly recommend that you check to determine if your personal property is covered by your family’s homeowner/renters insurance policy while you are attending college. If your parent’s insurance policy does not cover your items while at college, we highly recommend that you consider purchasing minimal limits to cover your personal property.
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Students will be allowed to bring personal computers on campus this summer. Please be advised that all personal computers must be registered with the program upon check-in (July 5, 2009). The following requirements must be met if students are to retain the systems (desktop or laptop) in their rooms.
The student:
- must have a security locking device
- must sign a Risk Management Policy Contract and Statement (parent and student)
- must record serial numbers and keep track of personal equipment
- must take laptops/notebooks home on the weekends (desktop units may remain on campus)
If you do not adhere to the requirements outlined above, you cannot have a computer on campus. Students who do not have computers will have computer access through the University and OSP Waller Hall Computer Labs.
We strongly encourage you to:
- Record serial numbers, model numbers, and similar identifying information for your computer, watch, or other items of values.
- Keep money and valuables in a secure place. Do not keep excessive amounts of cash in your room.
- Keep your door locked at all times.
- Record the numbers and issuers of all your credit cards and bank accounts. Also, record the telephone numbers of these firms to facilitate notification should your cards be lost or stolen.
During closedown periods, residents MUST take all valuables home!
