Sustainability@SEBS
Hands-On Learning, Real-World Impact
At the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS), sustainability isn’t just an idea—it’s something you do. Rooted in Rutgers’ land-grant tradition of service to the state and community, Sustainability@SEBS gives students the tools to tackle today’s environmental, economic, and social challenges head-on.
Interdisciplinary Sustainability Minor
Students from any Rutgers–New Brunswick major can add the Sustainability Minor, which is built around:
Experiential learning—get outside the classroom and into the field
Applied problem-solving—work on real projects with real partners
Team-based collaboration—learn how to work across disciplines
What You’ll Learn
Our program follows the Global Council for Science Education’s (GCSE) eight core competencies for sustainability, focusing on:
Systems, strategic, and futures thinking
Applied problem solving and project implementation
Reflection and adaptability
Community and stakeholder engagement
Just as important, we emphasize “soft skills” like communication, leadership, and collaboration—skills employers consistently say are critical for success.
Real-World Experience
We offer three major ways to gain hands-on sustainability experience:
Work with a community group, business, or nonprofit to create real solutions to sustainability challenges.
