Researchers at Rutgers University-New Brunswick have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that will help predict endangered whale habitat, guiding ships along the Atlantic coast to avoid them. The tool is designed to prevent deadly accidents and inform conservation strategies and responsible ocean development. 

Large fishes with commercial or recreational value, including sharks, are capable of quickly moving long distances. This confounds the ability to understand their distribution and population size and to protect vulnerable populations by creating reserves.

More than 265 students from across the U.S. dove into the mysteries of the ocean and explored how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can address global environmental challenges during a virtual event hosted by Rutgers University’s Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences.

In “Food, Nutrition, and Health,” Yanhong Jin encourages students to develop studies and gather data. Some have had their work published. 

For the past decade, José Ramírez-Garofalo, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources in the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, has tramped through swamps and meadows in the tri-state metropolitan area looking for signs of environmental change, including signs of new species, insect and otherwise.
