Nutritional Sciences Seminar: "Centering the Nutrition Priorities and Lived Experiences of Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth"

Heather Schier, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Appalachian State University

What are the nutritional priorities of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) young people? This talk centers the voices of TGD youth to explore the complex intersections of gender identity, food security, and eating behaviors. Drawing on mixed-methods research, it highlights how stigma, dysphoria, and limited access to affirming care shape the nutrition-related challenges—and resilience—of TGD youth and young adults. Emphasizing equity-driven, community-informed approaches, this seminar offers insight into how researchers, educators, and practitioners can better support the health and wellbeing of TGD communities through inclusive and affirming strategies.
